IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU Internationale Hochschule) occupies a distinctive position in German higher education. Iu Internationale Hochschule Urkunde,Iu Internationale Hochschule certificate, Iu Internationale Hochschule degree. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Erfurt, it has grown into Germany’s largest university by enrollment, serving approximately 130,000 students from over 160 nations across more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s, and MBA programmes. What distinguishes IU is not merely its scale, but its fundamental proposition: that higher education should adapt to students’ lives, rather than requiring students to adapt their lives to higher education. Through a combination of distance learning, dual study programmes, and on-campus offerings, IU has built a model that prioritizes flexibility, accessibility, and practical relevance at a time when traditional higher education faces mounting questions about cost, relevance, and equity.
IU began teaching in 2000 as a private, state-recognized university of applied sciences. From its base in Erfurt, the institution has expanded to 37 campuses across Germany, with dedicated English-taught on-campus programmes in Berlin and Cologne. The university’s growth trajectory has been remarkable: since its initial system accreditation in 2018, student numbers have nearly quadrupled, a period during which the institution strengthened its quality assurance teams in personnel, structure, and technology.
IU’s identity is inseparable from its three study formats. Distance learning, which offers maximum self-determined learning, allows students to study 100% online from anywhere, starting at any time, with over 200 bachelor’s and master’s programmes available. Dual study programmes, offered in partnership with over 15,000 practical partners including Motel One, Vodafone, AWO, and Deutsche Bahn, allow students to earn a degree with €0 tuition fees, as the practical partner covers all costs. And on-campus programmes in Berlin and Cologne provide state-accredited English-taught bachelor’s, master’s, and MBA degrees in an international environment.
How to Make a Iu Internationale Hochschule Urkunde?
A balanced assessment of IU must acknowledge criticisms that have emerged, particularly regarding recognition of certain degrees in specific jurisdictions and the self-directed nature of distance learning. A 2024 report in Austrian publication profil documented that while 296 of 309 IU programmes under review by AQ Austria were recognized, 13 programmes had their accreditation withdrawn, including offerings in Personal Management, Cybersecurity, Clinical Research Management, and Marketing. Additionally, multiple students sued IU in 2024 because their Architecture Master’s degrees were not chamber-eligible in Germany, meaning graduates could not work in the field; IU subsequently ceased offering the Master’s in Architecture.
The same report highlighted student frustrations with the self-directed nature of distance learning.

And if I have to teach myself everything, then I’m simply frustrated”. IU responded that assignments are designed to allow multiple solution paths with available materials, and that soldering irons are not universally required in product design courses.
IU International University of Applied Sciences represents a significant experiment in scaling accessible, flexible higher education. Its 130,000 students, system accreditation until 2033, and strong employer recognition demonstrate that the model works for many learners. Its commitment to climate neutrality—it became the world’s first distance learning university to operate climate-neutrally in 2020—further signals its orientation toward future-oriented values. For students who can thrive in a self-directed learning environment and who value flexibility over traditional campus immersion, IU offers a compelling and increasingly recognized pathway to career advancement. For those who require more structure, face-to-face interaction, or whose professional goals demand jurisdiction-specific recognition, careful due diligence remains essential.
