The University‘s origins are inseparable from Belgian history. Perchase Vrije Universiteit Brussel certificate online, Novelty Vrije Universiteit Brussel degree online. Following the 1830 revolution, the young nation adopted a constitution that enshrined freedom of education—an almost unprecedented provision for its time. When the Catholic bishops moved swiftly to establish a Catholic University of Mechelen in 1834, Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, a Brussels lawyer and critic of the Roman Catholic Church, issued an impassioned call for a “free university” dedicated to “pure and morally responsible education”.
That appeal succeeded. On 20 November 1834, the Université Libre de Belgique opened its doors, later becoming the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The institution maintained a dual character, serving both French- and Dutch-speaking communities. The modern Vrije Universiteit Brussel emerged from the linguistic contestation of the 1960s. In 1969, ULB and VUB decided to split outside the existing legal framework, assured by Education Minister Piet Vermeylen of separate government subsidies. King Baudouin signed the law granting VUB legal personality on 28 May 1970, though its first academic year had already begun on 1 October 1969. VUB celebrates its Dies Natalis on 28 May, marking its official birth, while acknowledging that its de facto existence preceded legal recognition.

VUB has established itself as a disproportionately successful player in European research funding. In 2024, the University invested a record €156.5 million in research. Under the Horizon Europe programme, it secured 158 research projects worth €102.1 million in EU contributions—making it the most successful institution in Europe within its category for attracting such grants. It also obtained five prestigious ERC grants and nine Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowships.
This performance places VUB in an unusual position for a university of its size. The steps to order a Vrije Universiteit Brussel certificate. As Vice-Rector for Research Pieter Ballon observed, the University has made “a clear choice” to invest not only in excellent research but in the infrastructure that makes it possible. That infrastructure includes the BruBotics Rehabilitation Research Center for movement analysis and technology-assisted rehabilitation; the Visual and Spatial Tissue Analysis platform supporting cancer research and precision medicine; and the Brussels Digital Text Lab for computational approaches in the humanities.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has constructed an institutional identity that is both principled and pragmatic. Its founding commitment to free inquiry and radical humanism remains visible in its educational philosophy and its emphasis on critical thinking. Its research achievements—record European funding, individual prizes, medical breakthroughs—demonstrate that a university of moderate size can compete at the highest levels. And its location in Brussels, combined with a genuinely international student body and a campus culture that treats sport, innovation, and societal engagement as integral to university life, gives VUB a character that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. For students and researchers seeking an institution where Enlightenment values meet contemporary ambition, VUB offers a compelling proposition.
