The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is not the largest accounting body in the world by membership, nor is it the only one that certifies accountants. AICPA certificate, AICPA degree, AICPA diploma. But it is the institution that has shaped the American CPA profession more than any other, and its current moment is defined less by its historical authority than by a set of structural challenges that no amount of standard-setting can resolve on its own. Founded in 1887, the AICPA has spent more than a century building the infrastructure of a profession—ethics codes, auditing standards, the Uniform CPA Examination, peer review—only to find that the ground beneath that infrastructure is shifting in ways that require it to rethink what it is for.
The AICPA’s formal mission is to power “the success of global business, CPAs, CGMAs and specialty credentials by providing the most relevant knowledge, resources and advocacy, and protecting the evolving public interest”. The Institute sets ethical standards for the profession and U.S. auditing standards for private companies, not-for-profits, and federal, state, and local governments. It develops and grades the Uniform CPA Examination. It operates the peer review program through which firms are inspected every three years, a requirement that fifty-two of the fifty-five U.S. jurisdictions use as a condition of license renewal. It maintains the Code of Professional Conduct, which more than 412,000 members adhere to as a condition of membership, and which twenty states and jurisdictions have adopted as a requirement for practice.
This is a substantial portfolio. But it is also a narrower one than the AICPA once held. The Institute formerly set accounting standards and auditing standards for all entities. Those responsibilities have been redistributed over the past half-century: accounting standard-setting moved to the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and auditing standard-setting and securities regulation for public companies moved to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board following the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. What remains is a set of functions that are essential to the profession’s coherence but increasingly difficult to sustain as the profession itself fractures along lines of practice setting, geography, and generational expectation.

The AICPA’s dilemma is not unique among professional associations, but it is unusually visible because the CPA credential is so central to the functioning of U.S. capital markets and corporate governance.
Procedures to Buy a AICPA certificate. The Institute must simultaneously defend the rigor of a credential that is becoming harder to obtain, expand access to that credential to address a pipeline crisis, maintain ethical standards that command public trust, and position the profession as relevant in an economy increasingly shaped by technologies that render routine accounting work obsolete.
Its responses—the 120-hour pathway, the CIMA partnership, the AI programming, the Rise2040 foresight exercise—are all reasonable. But they share a common characteristic: they are institutional adaptations to external pressures rather than internally generated reinventions. That is not a criticism so much as an observation about what professional bodies can and cannot do.
The AICPA’s enduring contribution may not be any single initiative but the fact that it has kept the profession’s core infrastructure intact—the exam, the ethics code, the peer review system—through a period of significant disruption. The question is whether that infrastructure remains sufficient for a profession that is being asked to become something more than a compliance function. The AICPA’s answer, embedded in its recent investments, is that it must try. Whether it succeeds will depend less on the Institute’s strategy documents than on whether the next generation of accountants decides that the credential is worth the effort.
