As one of the academic units within American Public University System (APUS), APU shares a mission with its sibling institution, American Military University (AMU), to provide “respected, relevant, accessible, affordable, and student-focused online programs” that prepare students for service and leadership in a diverse, global society. In 2026, the United States Distance Learning Association recognized AMU and APU with the Distance Learning Compass Award for Mental Health and Wellness, citing the university’s 24/7 teletherapy and crisis support, access to licensed counselors, and a global peer-support network available in 25 languages. These services address a dimension of online education that is often overlooked: the isolation and stress that can accompany studying at a distance while managing work and family obligations.

American Public University is not an institution attempting to replicate the traditional residential college experience online. It is something more specific: a university designed from its founding for students whose lives do not accommodate traditional education. Its $360 undergraduate tuition and $250 military rate make it one of the most affordable options in American higher education. Its HLC accreditation and state authorizations provide legitimacy that matters for transfer and employment. Its five schools offer programs in fields—security studies, business, health sciences, information technology—that align with the public service and defense communities it was created to serve. For working adults, military personnel, and public servants seeking a degree that fits into an already demanding life, APU offers a pathway that is both practical and purpose-built.
